Are you thinking of becoming a digital nomad? Or maybe you’ve been living the digital nomad lifestyle for a while now, but you’re finding your current visa situation to be a bit restrictive.
If either of these applies to you, then you’re in the right place.
In this blog post, I’ve compiled a list of all the countries in the world that offer some sort of visa for digital nomads (even those that are still planning to).
I’ll also be giving a brief overview of each country’s visa requirements so that you can get a better idea of which one’s the best fit for you.

What Is a Digital Nomad Visa?
A digital nomad visa is a special type of visa that’s designed for people who work online and often travel to different countries. It usually has fewer restrictions than a traditional work visa, so it’s easier to qualify for.
This visa also often allows you to stay in a country for up to a year, which is longer than the standard tourist visa. It’s extremely beneficial if you want to work in multiple countries for a year.
How Do Digital Nomad Visas Work?
To qualify for a digital nomad visa, you’ll typically need to prove that you’re self-employed, a digital nomad, or a remote worker and that you can support yourself financially. This can be done by providing financial documents such as bank statements and invoices.
You’ll of course need to show that you have a valid passport. And in some cases, you may also need to provide proof of insurance.
Each country has a different set of requirements and I’ll go over that in more detail in the rest of this article.
Digital Nomads vs. Remote Workers vs. Freelancers
Let’s just differentiate these 3 terms for a bit:
A digital nomad is someone who often travels to different countries and works online. They don’t have a permanent home and typically move around every few months. They can be remote workers, freelancers, or self-employed business owners.
A remote worker is someone who works online but doesn’t necessarily travel as frequently. They may have a permanent home base but also work from coffee shops, coworking spaces, or other locations when they’re feeling inspired.
A freelancer is someone who works online and can often choose their hours and projects. They typically work with multiple clients and may or may not have a permanent home base.
A Disclaimer on the Types of Digital Nomad Visas
Some of the visas in this list aren’t targeted toward digital nomads specifically, but I’ve included them anyway because they can be useful for anyone who plans to live and work in a foreign country for an extended period.
These visa programs come in different names and forms. The rules constantly change, too. And while I’ll make sure to update this page regularly, you should still do your research before applying for any of them.

Digital Nomad Visas in Africa
Cabo Verde’s Remote Working Program
The archipelago of Cabo Verde (Cape Verde) is located off the coast of West Africa, and it’s a great destination for digital nomads. The weather is perfect year-round, there are plenty of coworking spaces and cafes, and the cost of living is relatively low.
If you want to experience the best of what Cabo Verde has to offer, then join their remote working program and get the chance to work from anywhere in the country for 6 months. You’ll enjoy world-class beaches, kitesurfing, diving, and so much more.
Plus, you’ll be exempt from income tax while you’re working there remotely.

Mauritius Premium Travel Visa
Mauritius is a small island located in the Indian Ocean. It’s best known for its beaches, resorts, and natural beauty, and it’s also home to some of the world’s most beautiful coral reefs. It’s a popular destination for people all over the world.
The island nation has a Premium Travel Visa, which is a long-stay visa for foreign tourists, retirees, or professionals, allowing them to work remotely from the island.
This visa is valid for one year and can be renewed. Applying for it is also free.

Seychelles Workation Program
Seychelles is an archipelago of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of East Africa, with its capital city of Victoria located on the main island of Mahé.
This country is a tropical paradise with some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Its islands offer a wide variety of activities such as swimming, fishing, sailing, windsurfing, and more.
The people are also friendly and welcoming, and the country has a rich culture with influences from Africa, Asia, Europe, and India.
If you’re looking for a tropical destination for your next home as a digital nomad, Seychelles is the perfect place for you, especially with its Workation Retreat Program that allows you to stay on the islands for up to a year.
The requirements are pretty straightforward–you’ll need a valid passport, proof of being either an employee or business owner, as well as proof of income. You’ll also need to have medical and travel insurance.

How to Apply:
You can apply for the Seychelles Workation Retreat Program online. You should do this at least 60 days to no later than 2 weeks before arrival.
If your application is approved, you’ll be given a Visitors Workation Permit (VWP) and after that, you’ll have to apply for a Health Travel Authorisation (HTA).
Successful applicants will receive a unique document featuring the Seychelles Workation Program logo and their ID number.
South Africa’s Plans for a Digital Nomad Visa
South Africa is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, with a wide range of different ecosystems. The country has a rich history and culture and is home to many different ethnic groups. It’s also a major tourist destination, with millions of visitors each year.
There’s no digital nomad visa for the country yet, but their government is considering introducing one. This would be a significant move, as it’d make South Africa the first country in mainland Africa to offer a visa specifically for digital nomads and remote workers.
The visa will allow them to live and work in the country for up to a year. It’s still in the proposal stage, but here’s what we know so far:

Bali’s Plans for a Digital Nomad Visa
Bali, Indonesia is a popular digital nomad destination because of its beautiful beaches, vibrant culture, and stunning natural scenery. The island is home to a large expatriate community and has a strong infrastructure for remote workers and online entrepreneurs.
In 2019, the Indonesian government announced plans to launch a digital nomad visa, which would allow foreign nationals to live and work in the country for up to 5 years and they won’t have to pay any income tax.
The Indonesian government is still working on the details of the visa and it’s not clear when it’ll be launched. If you’re interested in becoming a digital nomad in Bali, keep an eye on the latest news and updates.

Dubai’s One-Year Virtual Working Programme
Dubai in the United Arab Emirates has one of the most business-friendly climates in the world, and as a result, many digital nomads have been drawn to its shores in recent years.
One of the biggest attractions of the city is its income-tax-free status for individuals. This makes it an ideal place to set up base as a digital nomad.
In October 2020, Dubai launched a one-year virtual working program, which allows you to live and work by the beach in this famous desert oasis mega-city.
Just bear in mind that the UAE is an Islamic country, and there are certain rules that you should adhere to.

Taiwan’s Employment Gold Card
Taiwan is quickly gaining a reputation as one of the best places to work and live as a digital nomad. The country offers a great quality of life, good internet speeds, and is very welcoming to foreigners.
And they offer the Employment Gold Card, which is a 4-in-1 card that includes a resident visa, work permit, Alien Resident Certificate (ARC), and re-entry permit. It allows you to stay in the country for 1-3 years, and you can leave and re-enter at any time, for as many times as you want, even during COVID-19.
This card has multiple benefits such as tax deductions for certain salaries, as well as the ability to bring your family with you to Taiwan.
It’s not exactly a digital nomad visa, as it’s more targeted to entice highly-skilled professionals from these 8 industries:

- Economy
- Education
- Culture & Arts
- Sports
- Finance
- Law
- Architecture
But if you can prove that you’re earning at least TWD160,000 or approximately $5,500 monthly, then you don’t necessarily have to be specialized in the above areas — you can still apply for the Gold Card.

Thailand’s Plans for a Digital Nomad Visa
Thailand is a popular digital nomad destination for many reasons. It’s home to stunning natural beauty, with pristine beaches and lush jungles, and it has a rich culture and history, with plenty of temples and attractions to explore.
It’s also very affordable, with a wide range of budget-friendly accommodation and dining options. The weather is great all year round, too.
For many years, the visa situation has been fairly straightforward for digital nomads. You could enter the country on a 60-day tourist visa and then apply for a 30-day extension through a visa run. And in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Tourism Authority of Thailand introduced the Special Tourist Visa (STV) so people could stay longer.
If you want to stay even longer, the country has more visa types such as the Thai Elite Visa that’d let you stay in the country for 5-20 years. And now, Thailand is planning to launch a new visa specifically for digital nomads in a bid to attract even more long-term visitors to the country.
This visa will be valid for up to 10 years, for multiple entries and exits, and will allow holders to work remotely from anywhere in Thailand. It’ll cost 10,000 baht (US$300) per year, and will be available to four categories of foreigners: Wealthy global citizens, wealthy pensioners, professionals working remotely from Thailand, and skilled professionals.

Vietnam Visas for Digital Nomads
Vietnam has been a favorite for digital nomads because of its vibrant culture, delicious food, and affordable cost of living. While the country does not yet offer a digital nomad visa, there are several visa options available that make it possible to stay in Vietnam for extended periods.
The most common way to enter Vietnam is with a tourist visa, which allows for stays of up to 90 days. For those who want to stay longer, it’s possible to extend your visa by doing a visa run or applying for a new visa.
Sri Lanka’s Plans for a Digital Nomad Visa
Currently, people taking their nomading journey to Sri Lanka will have to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), which grants a 30-day Short Visit visa upon arrival to the country. This visa can be extended to a maximum of 270 days.
Good news for nomads, the Cabinet of Ministers of Sri Lanka has announced that they’ll be introducing a digital nomad visa, as well as an extended tourist visa, for people who want to stay in the country longer.

Digital Nomad Visas in Europe
Croatia’s Temporary Stay for Digital Nomads
Croatia is a beautiful country located in the Mediterranean. Despite its small size, it has a lot to offer digital nomads, from its stunning beaches and islands to its rich culture and history.
While not technically a visa, there’s an established program that digital nomads can apply for to stay and work in Croatia for up to 1 year, and this can’t be extended. You can, however, apply for a new visa 6 months after your stay has expired.
To qualify, you must have a remote job that allows you to work online or proof that you have a registered company outside of Croatia. You’ll also need to have health insurance that covers you during your stay in the country. The cost for the program is 420 HRK to 880 HRK (about $60-$139) and you can apply online.

Cyprus Digital Nomad Visa Scheme
Cyprus is an island country in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, and it’s a popular tourist destination with its warm climate, sandy beaches, and ancient ruins. There are plenty of things to do on the island, including hiking, swimming, and sightseeing.
Recently, the country has rolled out a new digital nomad visa program that allows remote workers and entrepreneurs to live in the country for 1 year, and you can extend your stay for up to 2 more years. You can also bring family members with you.
The catch: As of March 2022, there’s a limit of 500 applicants that can be issued a residence permit.

If you want to apply for a digital nomad visa, you’ll have to enter Cyprus with a tourist visa, and within 3 months of your arrival, you should submit your application to the Civil Registry and Migration Department.

Czech Republic’s Entrepreneurship Long-Term Visa
The Czech Republic is a landlocked country in Central Europe with a mostly temperate climate. It’s filled with beautiful forests, mountains, and rivers. Prague, the capital (and one of the coolest cities in the world), is home to historical bridges, medieval buildings, and cobbled streets.
For digital nomads, the Czech Republic offers a great quality of life, especially if you’re looking for an affordable place to live and work. The country has excellent infrastructure, fast internet, and coworking spaces. There are also many events and meetups for digital nomads.
If you want to stay in the Czech Republic for longer than 90 days, you’ll need to apply for a Long-Term Visa. This visa allows you to stay in the country for up to 1 year and can be renewed.
To apply for a Long-Term Visa, you’ll need to have health insurance, proof of income, and a valid passport. You’ll also need to show that you have enough money to support yourself during your stay.
Once you have all the required documents, you can apply for a Long-Term Visa at a Czech consulate.

To apply for the Czech Republic’s long-term visa, you’ll first have to find a consulate and schedule an appointment. Then lodge your application and present the required documents.

Estonia’s Digital Nomad Visa
Estonia is a small country in Northern Europe with a population of just over 1.3 million people. Despite its small size, Estonia is a popular tourist destination, thanks to its beautiful nature, rich culture, and interesting history.
Some of its best places include Tallinn, the capital city, and Saaremaa, an island in the Baltic Sea. It’s also home to many forests and lakes, making it a perfect destination for nature lovers.
In June 2020, Estonia became the first country in the world to officially introduce a digital nomad visa, which allows you to stay in the country for up to a year and work there legally.

If you’re eligible to apply, you fill up their online application form, print it, and affix your signature. After that, you’ll have to personally submit your application and required documents to the nearest Estonian embassy or consulate.
Your application will be reviewed within 30 days.
France’s Long-Stay Visa
France doesn’t have a digital nomad visa, but they do have a long-term visa that allows you to live and work there for longer than 3 months. Getting this visa will let you extend your stay in the country from 3 months to 1 year.
During this time, the long-stay visa is identical to a Schengen visa, allowing you to travel throughout the Schengen Area and visit places outside of France for periods not exceeding 90 days in any 180 days.
This visa has 4 categories: Tourism or personal, professional, education, and family. Extended stays for tourists won’t allow you to engage in any professional activity, so you’ll want a professional long-stay visa for that.
But for remote workers with employees outside of France, this is still a grey area, so you’ll probably have an easier time applying for the visa under the tourism/personal category instead of the professional category. Not technically legal, but digital nomads have been doing this for years.

Germany’s Freelance “Freiberufler” Visa
Travelers flock to Germany for its rich history, stunning architecture, and diverse landscape. Some of the most famous attractions in Germany include the Berlin Wall, Cologne Cathedral, and the Black Forest. It’s a great destination for digital nomads.
Freelancers and self-employed foreigners who want to live and work in Germany long-term can apply for the Freelance “Freiberufler” Visa for 3 months, which can be converted to a residence permit, which could then be used to extend your stay for up to 3 years.
